What IS La Día de Los Muertos?

CemetarioAlmoloyaRio1995The other day we mentioned that Roberta’s recent s-c-a-a-a-r-y tale, Forbidden Love , makes for a wild Día de los Muertos tale. This Latin celebration of the dead is still going on — it takes place over three days, from October 31 to November 2. It’s an amazing and strangely beautiful festival, with roots in Europe as well as indigenous America.

It occurred to us that readers who live in less than perfectly diverse parts of the US may wonder what on earth La Día de los Meurtos is, and what about the book resonates with the tradition.

The Day of the Dead is a time when families and friends gather to remember and honor loved ones who have passed through the veil. People will build an altar filled with folk icons and treats to invite the spirits to come back and visit. It’s believed that the spirits of children visit on All Hallow’s Eve (Hallowe’en: October 31) and adults visit on All Saints Day, November 1. On November 2, the living will visit cemeteries, where they decorate graves, remember their lost ones’ lives, and leave offerings to them.

Offerings may be flowers — the marigold is the classic for this festival, toys for the kids, a bottle of tequila for the grown-ups, and foods such as candy skulls, candied pumpkin, and special bread for the dead called pan de muerto.

It’s a very ancient tradition. Some people believe its origins date exclusively to pre-Columbian Central American cultures, whose traditions were absorbed by the Catholic Church and allowed to survive to this day. Others point out that the modern celebration blends medieval European rituals with the Native American traditions: the Spaniards brought the Christian All Souls day with them when they arrived in the New World, and the correlation between that and the Indian tradition wasn’t lost on them.

So, how does Forbidden Love fit in to the Día de los Muertos tradition?

Well, one of the main characters, the eerie Muertia, brings to mind la Santa Muerte, also called Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte (“Holy Death”). Santa Muerte is a folk saint, worshipped all over Mexico, the American Southwest, and even in Puerto Rico.

The beloved Muertia’s description, when she first appears in the story, is spookily reminiscent of this alarming personage…

Santa-muerte-nlaredo2If you’re not frightened, very frightened, you should be! 😀

A similar figure, the Catrina, is strongly associated with la Día de los Muertes. She also brings to mind our heroine, Muertia:

Catrinas_2Muertia — the Muertia of our story — is a shape-shifter who soon transforms herself into a beautiful woman and who sincerely loves an earthly man. Still, she and her human lover are accursed, for a reason that we don’t learn until near the end of the story.

The story blends the ancient tradition of Mictecacihuatl, the queen of the Aztec underworld, with postmodernist magical realism — to weird and wonderful affect. We hope you’ll get a chance to read Forbidden Love, remembering that it is an erotic story with explicit language and imagery.

Another Day, Another Book

Forbidden Love 3 LoResSo yesterday our latest Racy Book went online, for the delectation of our Racy Readers! This one is a Halloween story, and because of the [S-C-A-A-A-A-R-Y] nature of one character, we think it’s also a Dia de los Muertos story. What could she be other than la Santa Muerta? And boy, is she alarming!

The author — one of several who write as Roberta Stuart — has a real gift for magical realism. He (yeah, he’s a guy) revealed that in some of the earlier pieces, but this time he really lets it rip! The story is wild, and it gets even weirder when you finally find out what the male protagonist really is in his life…and then you think about the symbolic implications where the recent history of the Church is concerned. Wow!

This is an author who could write some serious literature, if only he didn’t have to hold down a day job to put food on the table. The question for him — and for all of us here at Camptown Races Press — is whether a skilled writer can put food on the table by writing NON-serious literature (ahem!), leaving some free time and creative energy for higher-minded stuff.

Our heroine, Anaïs Nin, shows that can be done. You’ll recall that while she was living in Paris amongst the other free-wheeling artists and writers of her time, she took on a freelance job writing porn for a wealthy, dirty-minded client. You can buy collections of these stories at Amazon, interestingly. They’re regarded as the first erotica written from a woman’s perspective. And you have to allow, the spin is different from the hard-core stuff you see written for men by men. There’s a reason a portal like PornHub reckons its readership is 80% male, while readers of our kind of literature are about 80% female.

Actually, Anaïs Nin’s racy stories are interesting. Particularly interesting is the fact that, presumably because they’re now regarded as artifacts of literary history, characteristics that would instantly get one of our stories banned from Amazon are blithely allowed to pass: pedophilia, rape, incest, and the like. You’ll also find a rehash (amazingly mediocre) of The Romance of Lust on Amazon, also full of child-effing, mother-effing, sister-effing, and everyone-whipping. One does wonder about Amazon’s double standard. Not that we’d want to see more of those things on Amazon. Just sayin’.

At any rate, here at Camptown Races we hope to write fun, entertaining, and even up-lifting (hey! stop that laughing, you!) stories that are sexy and free of violence or children. Be safe, be happy, and enjoy!

w00t! Thanks to everyone who’s subscribed!

Wow! We’re tickled at all the people who are subscribing to our little gossip site! Thank you for signing up, everyone.

For your delectation, here’s a joke the Boss brought home from her business group this morning:

A priest, a doctor, and a lawyer go deep-sea fishing in a rowboat. After a bit, the boat starts to leak.

The lawyer says to the priest, “Pray! Pray that the boat stops leaking and we don’t sink!”

So the priest prayed. But the boat kept leaking. It was listing in the water pretty badly. Things are not looking very good for our friends.

Parts_of_a_shark.svg

EEEEK!

Now a school of sharks notices they’re in trouble and starts to circle the boat. More and more sharks, all very excited, come along and circle around and around the boat.

“PRAY HARDER!” says the doctor. “Pray like crazy that those sharks don’t get us!”

Pretty soon the sharks start to form a line, nose to tail, starting at the boat’s stern. They line up like that, one after another, all the way from the boat to the shore.

The lawyer jumps up on the nearest shark’s back and hops across the sharks just like they were a pontoon bridge and jumps off on the beach and runs away.

“What on earth would make the sharks do a thing like that?” the priest wonders aloud.

“Professional courtesy,” says the doctor.

We don’t know which is scarier: a shark, a lawyer, or a kelpie lurking in some Scottish lagoon. 🙂 But we’d be even MORE tickled if you read The Kelpie and told us which one you think is scariest. Or maybe Aunt Tillie is scariest!

Weird Encounter of the Celtic Kind

We are totally psyched by Camptown Races’ new book, Kelpie. It’s part of our Halloween crush…and is it ever spooky!

Joy: Spooky is right. My hair stood right on end!

Bliss: Me, too! Kinda annoying…it took me 45 minutes to get that hairstyle right.

Joy: This book is short, but good. It’s got a really strange twist at the end.

Bliss: “Strange”! That’s an understatement. I mean…a horse? In the river? What?

Joy: Those Celts! It’s a Scottish story that goes way back to the Middle Ages. Or maybe even before that. Druids!

Bliss: Maybe the guy was a Druid, huh?

Joy: All things are possible!

Don’t miss this fun, quickie Halloween read! It’s at Amazon right now.

Veronica & KJ, comin’ our way!

The Boss is publishing Camptown Races Press’s next book this weekend. It’s called Veronica & KJ, and it’s pretty interesting stuff: “transgender and more,” as she puts it.

We all had a time trying to locate a nice cover image. The Boss thought something really sensual and sexy, like a Toulouse-Lautrec painting, would go with the story, but it had to show two women. Together, if you know what we mean. So we — Joy and Bliss — found this picture, which we think is extremely cool:

Veronica & KJWhatever else you say about it, THAT is a picture that makes a statement. The statement. We mean…really. Do you have any problem figuring out what’s going on there?

Now Aunt Tilly says, “but that Amazon place doesn’t allow real Amazons. They won’t let you publish a picture with a woman’s boob hanging out in front of God and everybody!”

The Boss says, “It’s a freakin’ masterwork, forhevvinsake! They can’t ban Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec!”

She's so strict!

She’s so strict!

“They most certainly can, young lady!” says Aunt Tilly. “They own the store. They can do anything they please. And if they say no boobs allowed, they probably  mean ‘no boobs allowed.'”

“But it took half the afternoon to design that cover,” the Boss whines.

“Too bad. If you don’t want them to take your golden words down, you’d better come up with a proper package for ’em.”

So a day or so later, the Boss comes back with this one:

Veronica & KJ SOFA“What could be more perfect?” the Boss crows.

We think it’s even better than the boob portrait. We love it. We are so excited!

Aunt Tilly inspects it carefully. Pretty quick she says, “You thought the boob flopping in the breeze was going to get your book knocked off the Internet? Wait till the Amazon censors see that chick’s red bush peeking out there!”

“Bush?” we all squawk.

“What do you think that thing in her lap that matches her hair is? Interesting that she hennas it the same color red…but no matter how gorgeous the color is, the Amazon censor will spot that in a second.

“Besides, yellow type on gray? What’s with that?”

“Yellow is a sex symbol,” says the Boss.

“No, dear. The broad’s red bush is a sex symbol. The gray looks they’ve been smoking too many French cigarettes.”

Oh, well. The Boss took her design and plodded off into the night.

Next morning, she comes back with this:

Veronica & KJ 2Girlfriends LORESHow could she lose? Two girls in house dresses, with sea-green type. No boobs. No yellow cover lines. No gray background. Finally Aunt Tilly approved.

All we can say is it’s a darn good thing Mr. Toulouse-Lautrec liked to paint a lot…

Halloween Is Coming! Get a Free Treat NOW!

We love the fall, because it’s full of FUN! Especially fun holidays. First up is Halloween, which we think is more fun than anything. We live in an old central-city neighborhood that’s begun to gentrify — young couples are moving in and bringing their cute little kids with them. And since this is one of the few modestly affluent ’hoods around, the people in the low-income apartments all around us bring their kids here, where they can be a little safer tricking-and-treating. Everybody goes out in front to greet the little haunts — the place is alive with kids, and it’s more fun than anything.

Speaking of trick (heh!) or treat, Camptown Races Press has got a big bag of Halloween treats for readers! The first one, Janet and the Djinn, will be available today or tomorrow at Amazon. This is a fun and up-beat story (a couple of the scary ones that come out closer to the Big Ghost Day are a shade on the dark side!). A spurned wife, feeling lonely and rejected, answers a Craig’s List ad. The result? Oh my!

Would you like an advance copy? Sign up for our newsletter! The form is right at the top of the page. We’ll send new subscribers a FREE copy of Janet and the Djinn, a spirited story guaranteed to brighten your day and turn you on. Leave a comment below so we’ll know to send you one right away!

Hurry! The book will be out in another day, so be sure to get yours before it’s available at Amazon!

UPDATE: This offer has ended. BIG THANK YOU to everyone who subscribed! We hope you enjoy Janet & the Djinn.

wooHOO!! Bobbi and the Biker IS HERE!!!

Our first Racy Book for Racy Readers, Bobbi and the Biker, is now officially published at Amazon! What a hoot! We know you’re going to enjoy it.

Bobbi and the Biker is a kind of beauty and the beast story. Or maybe more like a class warfare thing…she’s a university professor, he’s a rough & tough biker (so he’d like you to think) who’s also a carpenter with his own contracting business. They get together by accident, and to stay together, over time, they’ll have to make a whole lot of accommodations.

This book is the first in a series that we expect to go on for quite some time. The next one will be all about Bobbi’s Secret Life.

Several other tales will come out before that installment appears, though.

Next week Camptown Races Press will publish two new stories: Janet and the Djinn and Veronica and KJ. The djinn story is the first volley of our Halloween blitz, and Veronica & KJ is a transgender story with a surprising twist. By the end of this month, we expect to publish a total of eight Racy Books, and we should get another eight or ten up next month.

We’re so excited! Please buy our book and review it on Amazon!
